A trial under way at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary in Scotland is exploring whether artificial intelligence (AI) can help radiologists review thousands of mammograms - the low level X-rays used in breast cancer screenings. But while more women are attending routine screenings, the number of radiologists to review results is shrinking as they reach retirement age. The NHS Grampian's Gemini project -- a collaboration between the National Health Service, University of Aberdeen and private industry - is using the AI model Mia, developed by Kheiron Medical Technologies, with Microsoft providing the cloud computing services. Due to existing rules restricting AI use, the radiologists are trialling it as an additional check at the end of mammogram scan reviews. But a government review said replacing one human reader with AI could "cover half of the screening image reading burden of approximately 1.72 million images read each year".
