In a heartfelt endeavor, Katie Carr is taking on her late brother's unfinished kayaking challenge to visit all the areas named in the shipping forecast. Toby Carr, an accomplished sea kayaker from Cornwall, UK, began the ambitious quest but tragically passed away at the age of 40 from liver cancer in 2022. Now, his sister Katie is determined to complete the remaining 10 areas. As a novice kayaker, Katie acknowledges the mix of excitement, fear, and trepidation that accompanies this adventure. Having already completed her brother's commissioned book about the journey, titled "Moderate Becoming Good Later," she is now navigating the waters in her brother's kayak. With each stroke, she carries Toby's spirit forward. Katie has already conquered the areas along the Welsh coast and sets her sights on the Irish Sea regions her brother didn't reach. Born with Fanconi anemia, a rare genetic disease, Toby's vision for the shipping forecast challenge served as a coping mechanism after their brother Marcus's death in 2017. Through her book and her completion of the challenge, Katie aims to inspire others to embrace the outdoors, explore, and find their own adventures. She meticulously crafted the book using notes, voice recordings, videos, and conversations shared with Toby, ensuring his story would be shared. While Toby never knew Katie would accomplish his mission or finish the book, she believes he would be immensely proud.
