The world’s largest community of 3D-printed homes is being built in Texas, with 100 such homes set to welcome residents starting September 2023. The construction firm from the project, ICON, has used 3D printing to build social or subsidized housing in the past. Homes are single-story, 3-4 bedroom structures, with walls “printed” using a concrete-based material. Roofs come with solar panels, making them energy self-sufficient. While 3D-printed homes still rely on carbon-intensive concrete, project proponents affirm that 3D-printing is faster and more affordable than conventional building methods, and also reduces construction waste. The technology could also be used to combat homelessness or provide shelter following natural disasters.
