Thanks to Rodney Smith Jr. and his nonprofit Raising Men & Women Lawn Care Service, people in need are getting their grass cut for free and the youth mowers -- children and teens aged 7 to 17 -- get valuable mentorship. The organization,which Smith founded in Huntsville, Alabama, in 2016, helps disabled and older folks on fixed incomes, single parents and veterans, and has at least one participating kid in all 50 US states and in eight countries. After young people join the 50-Yard Challenge, the nonprofit mails them a T-shirt, sunglasses, and ear protection. For every 10 lawns mowed, they get a new shirt in a different color. Once they have done 50, Smith will drive to wherever they are in the US, do lawns with them, and give them a new mower, weed eater, and blower. So far, more than 4,900 youngsters have participated and more than 20,000 lawns have been mowed for free.
