Sweden’s Environmental Protection Agency has found that if added to cow feed, a chemical known as 3-NOPand red algae seaweed have “higher potential” to reduce methane but has recommended more study along with support for farmers, for whom it would be a big expense. The EU approved 3-NOP for dairy cows last year, and manufacturers say adding red algae to the feed of farm animals each day could cut methane emissions by as much as 90%. Volta Greentech, which is developing a seaweed factory to make cattle feed on Sweden’s west coast says pilot projects at two farms reduced methane emissions by cows by 80% a day. Volta Greentech has plans for a pilot project at a UK commercial beef farm next year.
