Inside a maximum security correctional facility, a prisoner is co-teaching a course aimed at breaking cycles of violence. Along with University of Chicago medical student India Hilty, Darnell Lane, who completed his bachelor's through Northeastern Illinois University’s “University Without Walls” program while serving a 45-year sentence at the Stateville Correctional Center, wants to show other prisoners how they can come to terms with their past mistakes and become resources to their communities. Seventeen prisoners enrolled in their violence prevention course, which covered topics such as factors that contribute to a culture of violence and how to heal from past trauma. According to Lane, “I will return to the outside and it’s my responsibility to the victim and his family to be a source of enrichment and hope.”
