One day, a crowd of neighborhood children gathered to listen as Ms. Maze read a book to her nieces while they sat on her front stoop in Baltimore, Maryland. When she was finished, the children asked her to read another book. She told them to read a book at home, but they said, “We have no books at home”. Setting out to address the problem of Baltimore’s book deserts, she discovered no cost vending machines which make books seem like a prize. Given that libraries can be overwhelming for children who haven’t done a lot of reading, she also matches children with the books that might interest them. She calls herself a radical street librarian, dedicated to providing kids in her neighborhood with books by whatever means necessary.
