Six nonprofits in Minneapolis-St. Paul have gotten $26.1 million in unexpected gifts from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott -- part of more than $109 million 24 Minnesota-based nonprofits have received since 2020. "We don't get a lot of good surprises like this," said Ann Cazaban of Southside Community Health Services, of the $2.6 million gift to her small clinic in south Minneapolis. City of Lakes Community Land Trust in Minneapolis, which provides affordable home ownership opportunities, got $10 million. Project for Pride in Living, an affordable housing developer in Minneapolis, got $7 million; Battered Women's Justice Project, $2.5 million; Hmong American Partnership in St. Paul, $2 million; and Way to Grow, which provides early childhood education, $2 million. Southside, which provides dental, medical and vision care for low-income residents, will build an affordable community health center. Cazaban says Scott's approach of saying “we trust you will use this money toward the mission and help as many people as you can" is very unusual.
