Earthworks Urban Farm, a nearly two-acre certified-organic farm in Detroit’s lower east side, was in a food desert when Capuchin Brother Rick Samyn began it in the 1990s after a neighborhood child asked what gas station he got his groceries from. Now it grows radishes, arugula, mustard greens, potatoes, garlic, and spinach, has orchards, an apiary and a greenhouse for year-round production, and attracts international volunteers. Every year, it sends four tons of food to the nearby Capuchin Soup Kitchen, which serves 150,000 meals a year to Detroit residents. Since 2010, Earthworks Agriculture Training has provided Detroit residents with skills needed to succeed in agriculture, changing many lives.
