India’s official consumption expenditure data for 2022-23, providing the first official survey-based poverty estimates for India in more than ten years, confirms that India has eliminated extreme poverty, as commonly defined internationally. The official data show a strikingly lower number of poor people in India than those estimated by the World Bank. India has had many publicly funded programs including a national mission for construction of toilets and attempts to ensure universal access to electricity, modern cooking fuel, and piped water. Rural access to piped water has risen to 75.7% from 16.8% in 2019.
