New Orleans high school student Naya Ellis, 14, has been named a champion in the National STEM Challenge for inventing a watch that detects signs of a stroke in adults. At first Naya wanted to design a watch that detected seizures but changed her plan after her grandmother suffered a stroke. WingItt works by detecting internal symptoms such as nerve impulses and heartbeats. Naya is one of 126 students of over 2,500 nationwide to be selected as champions in the National STEM Challenge for grades 6 to 12. The students are receiving two months of coding training and four months of master classes with STEM experts.
