When the coronavirus pandemic forced schools to shut down, educators in Detroit found themselves playing a new role: detective. They needed to track down students who consistently failed to show up for online class. Knocking on doors, calling relatives, friends and neighbors, school administrators did whatever it took to find their students. When the kids were finally found, the educators found they were grieving loved ones who had passed, had moved homes multiple times, or had single parents working overtime and unable to home-school. Filling in the gaps, educators' persistent follow-ups, food deliveries, referrals to resources like grief counseling and thoughtful gestures cast a wide net of care to children and families slipping through the cracks.
