The Navajo Nation had the highest rate of coronavirus in the country. How did they combat it? By staying at home and living more simply, with a resurgence in farming. There has subsequently been a steady decline in cases. With grocery stores up to 40 miles away and shelter-in-place rules in effect, the community that had turned away from agriculture only 5 years ago, due to the impact of spills, leaks and environmental disasters, has picked up its tools and farming equipment to return to its old self-sustainable ways. As the community comes to rely more on farming during the pandemic, there is an urgent need for the EPA to act on the seriousness of past spills and prevent future one. In doing so, the EPA has made it a Super Fund Site.
