Renate Wedel, who spent much of her married life in central Germany near Hesse, died in December 2019. Her husband, who died in 2014, left her the millions of dollars he accumulated through stock market investments. Last April, the community that the couple had called home learned that Renate bequeathed her fortune to the district's six villages. "The community of Waldsolms posthumously thanks the Wedel couple for this important inheritance," they said in a statement. "We will deal with it very responsibly, develop our community for the good of all and keep an honorable memory of both," it added in a story covered by CNN. Residents have been in discussion about using the funds for cycling paths, buildings, public transportation, a kindergarten and other facilities for local children.
