A group of 14 nations recently announced their agreement to protect and sustain ocean health; 100% of the oceans under their national jurisdictions will be sustainably managed by 2025. The group is an unusual and potentially influential consortium, including Australia, Canada, Chile, Ghana, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Namibia, Norway, Portugal and the island nations of Fiji, Jamaica and Palau. Combined, these nations represent 40 percent of the world's coastlines, 20 percent of the world's fisheries, and 20 percent of the world's shipping fleets. The solutions involve a range of 74 actions and bring together the goals of protecting ocean health with increasing renewable energy and reducing poverty. Projections from scientists show that every $1 invested in a sustainable ocean would return $5 in economic, social and environmental benefits. The 14 nations are now inviting other nations to join the effort.
