A new study by Yale University found that the total mass of electronic waste generated by Americans has been declining since 2015. The biggest contributor to the decline is the disappearance of the large, bulky cathode-ray tube (CRT) televisions and computer monitors from American homes, said Callie Babbitt, professor at Rochester Institute of Technology. Another factor contributing to the decline is that the sheer number of devices entering the waste stream is leveling off or slightly declining. This is due to convergence, the idea that devices "multitask," as in phones serving as cameras, so people need fewer individual devices.
