An Austrian man, Eric Schwam, who fled the Nazis with his family during World War II, has bequeathed a large part of his fortune to the French village whose residents hid them from persecution for years. The 90-year-old wrote the surprise gift of nearly 2 million euros into his will for the village of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, which is located in southeastern France. Schwam and his family were sheltered in a school from their arrival in 1943 until the end of the war. They remained in the village until 1950. The bequest is targeted for educational and youth initiatives in the village.
