Helping parole officers better understand parolees could lead to big cost savings in the US corrections system. A study of 216 officers in one US city who were responsible for more than 20,000 people on parole or probation found that violations were cut by 13 percent, if officers had completed a 30-minute online empathy exercise. As public corrections agencies currently cost $80.7 billion, a 13 percent reduction in the number of people returned to prison could cut costs substantially. The study suggests that better relationships between parole officers and parolees are a "pivotal entry point" in reducing such recidivism.
