Otters are back in southern Alberta after more than 100 years. While in the 1990s, sightings of the playful animals were rare, naturalists say they are now being seen more often, suggesting their numbers are increasing. Otters are slow to reproduce and were nearly wiped out during intensive beaver trapping in Alberta. Then 11 northern otters were reintroduced in the south between 1981 and '82. While the population isn't monitored, the retired biologist responsible for the reintroduction says the otters are becoming a great success story.
