David Bass, the former assistant fire chief of Long Beach Fire Department in Louisiana, is the grateful recipient of a liver transplant. The story of how he received it is one of both love and loss. The donor was Matthew Carter, a 17-year-old who died in an armed robbery in Lafayette, La. Matthew's sister, Nichole Carter, said that ever since Matt got his learner's permit, he wanted to be an organ donor. In January 2020, Bass was notified of the availability of a liver; he underwent a 14-hour operation and almost died twice. Bass survived, though, and on Easter Sunday 2021, he reached out to Matt's family with the following message, Because of your family's love, I live. The families met recently, and Bass felt connected immediately upon seeing the Carter family. He said, Walking through that doorwhether they want me or not, I'm part of the family now. They're part of my family.
