Of the 15 billion trees cut each year around the world, much ends up discarded as waste. Now, for the first time, that waste is being used to 3D-print wood with a grain that mimics any tree from ash to mahogany -- or even endangered rosewood, which is more highly trafficked than ivory or rhino horn. The product can be sanded and refinished or printed in finished form, without waste, and the cost is competitive with wood. Forust, which is part of a larger 3D printing company, calls it the "first circular process for wood manufacturing."
