The pigeon, named “Passenger” by its chauffeurs, was first rescued in Baltimore by Mel Tillery in late April. Tillery found the pigeon in the middle of a road, where it had probably been hit by a car. Tillery stopped, scooped up the bird in a box and brought it home. She took some pictures and posted them on Tumblr, which eventually led Tillery to connect with pigeon rehabilitator Danielle Ramsey in Georgia. Ramsey thought she would be able to help the bird if it could be brought to Georgia. Tillery had animal lovers up and down the eastern seaboard volunteering to help, and the “Great Pigeon Relay” was born. The passenger pigeon arrived safely, and his condition is improving. The relay drivers feel like they were part of something meaningful and are keeping in touch with each other.
