A chance meeting in Berlin between award-winning Japanese composer Keiko Fujiie and renowned Burkinabe architect Francis Keré has led to a new opera that melds rap, West African traditions and classical music in telling the story of a Congolese poet's exile. Keré plans to build an opera house in Burkina Faso, where the opera can be staged after touring Africa and Europe. As the West African griot style is improvisational, Fujiie's collaborator, Maboudou Sanou, sometimes struggles to "follow the text step-by-step" but feels the opera will open doors for collaboration with other musicians around the world.
