Pope Francis, who has frequently spoken out on environmental issues, will trade in his popemobile for a new model running entirely on battery power. The pontiff met recently with Henrik Fisker and Geeta Gupta-Fisker, co-founders of the California-based electric car startup Fisker, which is donating the vehicle. The vehicle will have the bullet-proof glass cupola that allows the pope to be seen while being protected. The Fisker vehicle forgoes the traditional luxury materials like leather in favor of alternatives derived from recycled soft-drink bottles and even plastics reclaimed from the ocean. The company's vehicles will go into production in Austria late this year, and the pope will get his Fisker in late 2022.
