A San Francisco kosher bakery known for its savory stuffed pastries is now known worldwide for something else: hiring former prisoners to work there. The bakery had just opened in 2016, when it had an unusual job applicant -- a man who had served 23 years in prison for murder and robbery and, while there, had taught himself Hebrew so he could read the original Old Testament. After bakery owner Isaac Yosef hired him, word spread quickly. More than 20 residents of a nearby halfway house have since worked at "the Lifer Bakery," as it was dubbed by a popular podcast that focuses on life in prison. Many expressed their gratitude that the bakery took a chance on them when few others would. And that original hire? He now has his own business.
