When firefighters in a Michigan township were called to rescue a raccoon whose head was stuck in a sewer cover, they had to get creative, because the animal was "in there really good," said veteran firefighter Lt. Brian Lorkowski. The soap didn't work, and cutting the cast iron cover would be risky. Then they asked a homeowner to bring some cooking oil, which made it possible to free the raccoon without injury. We get ducks all the time that fall in the storm drains, Lorkowski said. [But] I can't remember any raccoon rescues. I think this is my first.
