The message is simple: You, too, could become a George Clooney, Don Cheadle, Kerry Washington, Mindy Kaling or Eva Longoria if you get a good education. And that is what the Roybal School of Film and Television Production aims to provide for underserved communities in the Los Angeles area, starting in 2022. The school will start with 9th- and 10th-grade students and expand to grades 11 and 12. "Physics is involved in the choice of a lens by a cinematographer, math is part of the foundation for a musical score in a film, critical thinking skills are needed to design a set, screenwriters need a foundation in literacy and a make-up artist needs to know the chemistry of the different materials they might use," says Los Angeles Unified Superintendent Austin Beutner.
