Philadelphia's community fridges rapidly became a community-driven "mutual aid" movement, after a few friends bought three fridges last summer, artists painted the Philadelphia Community Fridge logo on them, and local grocers, restaurants, bakeries and local farmers donated food. Philadelphia now has more than 20 "freedges," kept clean by volunteers, and the need for food does not seem to be lessening. Business owners who host fridges say they see more people coming by now than last year. Mama-Tee.com, which has 18 bright yellow fridges, just launched its first free grocery store, which also serves as a distribution point for restocking the fridges.
