Back in the fall, working in her home all day, Michelle Shiota felt like her mind was in a corset. She found an antidote in "awe walks" on the beach or her neighborhood, looking for unexpected and inspiring things. "When you take off the corset, your whole body goes, 'Oh, oh! That's much better.' This strategy reflects a new understanding of brain science. Rather than being hostage to our feelings, as we used to think, now we know that our "predictive brain" draws on our memories to interpret situations and thus allows us to rewire our brains, as Shiota did, by spending 5-10 minutes a day cultivating the emotions we want to have.
