When Michael Martin began preaching in a Baltimore neighborhood where green space is rare, he had no idea that 10 acres of unused church land would become a peace park and a model for restoring damaged ecosystems on the US East Coast. He just wanted to show stewardship in action. So more than 2,000 volunteers and many partners have helped create a vegetable garden and plant 1,800 new trees to replace dying ash trees. The US Forest Service has provided support. Now the church plans to replace its lawn with a pollinator garden and build a bamboo bridge over the creek -- and maybe a swimming hole.
