At its core, the United States's Declaration of Independence argues that all human beings have unalienable rights, and the primary objective of government is to afford citizens the opportunity to exercise these rights. Christopher Beem, co-host of the Democracy Works podcast, Pennsylvania State University, looks at whether a society founded on liberal principles [is] able to preserve itself when confronted with an existential threat, such as the coronavirus pandemic. He argues that it's a much about obligation to others as it is individual rights.
