Bhutan has fully vaccinated 90% of eligible adults within one week. The tiny Himalayan country, home to nearly 800,000 people, began giving out second doses on July 20. In April, it inoculated most eligible adults with the first dose in under two weeks after India donated 550,000 shots of AstraZeneca vaccine, but India halted exports as its infections surged. Bhutan restarted its drive after the US donated half a million doses of Moderna and 5,000 shots of Pfizer under the UN-backed COVAX program, and Denmark, Croatia and Bulgaria sent more than 400,000 AstraZeneca shots. More than 3,000 health workers took part in the mass drive, with some trekking through landslides and pouring rain to reach remote villages atop steep mountains to administer doses.
