The $8.2 billion MacArthur Foundation, which is based in Chicago but makes grants worldwide, is now directing more than half its funds to groups that are led by or serving minorities. Black-led and Black-focused organizations face "abysmally low funding relative to white-led organizations" despite having played a role in every major social movement, said the foundation's president, John Palfrey. He said pandemic job losses and police abuse of Blacks have compelled the foundation to increase its support of equity-promoting groups, including organizations that advocate for reparations to address the history of slavery. Palfrey urged corporations and groups with power to do more to promote racial and ethnic justice. To that end, the foundation announced $80 million in grants worldwide.
