Musician Yoko Sen has undertaken a challenging project: she wants to "humanize" hospital sounds. This became her mission after she fell ill in 2012 and had to spend weeks in hospitals; she found the sounds of alarms, monitors and hospital announcements detrimental to her healing. She's been interviewing patients, nurses and doctors, taking their input about how they experience hospital sounds and is working in partnership with Johns Hopkins, Stanford and Vanderbilt University Medical Center. While people experience sound differently, she has learned that almost all people found the sounds of nature soothing. Sen's work has received increased attention since the pandemic, as many people were without their loved ones in the hospital during their last moments.
