Drug cartels, homicides and explosions were commonplace in the city of Medellin, Colombia, but that was 30 years ago. Since then, the city has made investments to its infrastructure, such as creating Colombia's only metro system and a fleet of 69 electric buses, transforming it into a model of urban innovation. Now it wishes to reinvent itself again to be Latin America's first "eco-city." The government is hoping to electrify all public transportation by 2030, expand bike lanes by 50 percent and double the amount of public transport lines. They also wish to manufacture parts locally for its decarbonized mass transport system to boost its economy as a post-Covid recovery strategy. What's been happening is triggering huge transformations within people and institutions in general, said Daniel Quintero, the mayor of Medellin.
