Each month, the Food Stash Foundation rescues more than 30,000 kilograms of food that Vancouver grocery stores would otherwise throw out, and is now sharing it with people who are food insecure via its Rescued Food Market. Communications Coordinator Anna Gray says the new market gives people autonomy "to choose what you want, make your own bag, have as little or as much as you like. There's no discussion about payment." The market developed as a way to meet the increased demand for the foundation's food box program that delivers surplus produce to families in need, and complements the new community fridge, situated at the front of the building, which is accessible to people at all times.
