California has become the first state in the US to require large retailers to display toys and childcare items in gender-neutral ways. The new law, signed by Governor Gavin Newsome, does not ban girls and boys sections in shops, but large stores must also have a separate, gender-neutral section. The changes are intended to help consumers spot unjustified differences in similar products and tackle gender bias in children's products. Evan Low, one of the law's co-authors, called the segregation of toys the antithesis of modern thinking.
