Microsoft will take concrete steps to facilitate the independent repair of its devices following shareholder pressure, and Apple and Deere & Co. face similar resolutions -- a new front in the 'right to repair' fight. Microsoft will hire an independent consultant to study the benefits of increasing consumer access to parts and repair documentation, and publicly post a summary of findings by May 2022. Shareholder groups like As You Sow, which led the fight, want companies to facilitate access to parts, manuals, and software tools needed for repair and design easy-to-fix products so consumers can use devices longer.
