A guaranteed basic income plan will be a game-changer for 2000 selected artists in Ireland. Starting in March 2022, these artists will receive a payment of 325 per week for a period of three years. Having a stable arts income would mean we could continue to work in music while not worrying about making rent month-to-month, and without fear of burning out completely, says Sarah Corcoran, lead singer and guitarist with Irish indie rock band Pillow Queens. Professional artists, emerging or developing artists and creative arts workers will be selected through a non-competitive process, with participants chosen randomly. The scheme sends a message to artists living and working in Ireland that their work is valued, appreciated and necessary, adds Corcoran.
