In the winter of 2008, architect Didem Gokgoz wanted to do something for the stray cats of Istanbul's Mistik Park. She thought of building small containers for cats to shelter from the cold and rain. The idea caught on and today, cat houses are all over Istanbul in parks, outside hotels and shops, and at schools. People, companies, and local authorities foot the bill, and volunteers care for the cats. As well as encouraging more humane treatment of strays, it has changed Gokgoz's life. She founded a company that makes whimsical cat houses and products for pets and stray animals, and was asked to build cat houses for two universities, cafes, cosmetic shops, and the Industrial Development Bank of Turkey. Now she builds eco-friendly house furniture in her atelier and builds cat houses on demand.
