When the SOS went up at a troubled school, who answered the call? A bunch of Dads. Southwood High School in Shreveport, Louisiana, was suddenly plagued with violence; last month over three days, 23 students were arrested for fighting. Strangely, there hasn't been another incident since, perhaps in part because of the unusual Crisis Intervention team that was formed. A bunch of Dads of children in the school decided they were the best people to take care of kids and so they formed "Dads on Duty." A group of 40 Dads take turns showing up and hanging out at the school. Today any negative energy that enters the building has to run a gauntlet of good parenting. "I immediately felt a form of safety," said one student about the impact of having Dads on Duty at the school. Another student said, "The school has just been happy and you can feel it." The Dad's recognize that just being there makes a big difference to the kids as many don't have a father figure, or even a male in their lives. The Dads hope to start chapters of Dads on Duty all over the state.
