Thanks to the efforts of Spanish army captain and photographer Jose Antonio Valverde 50 years ago, the dama gazelle has been saved from extinction. In 1970, when Valverde saw gazelles in the wild, he was captivated by the species. He acted quickly to launch a rescue operation. With the help of a Spanish soldier, who was sheltering a small group of the species in the Western Sahara, Valverde negotiated the transfer of additional dama gazelles and a refuge was established. Today, they are thriving.
