When we're kind to others, we end up being happier ourselves, says psychology professor Elizabeth Dunn, who researches happiness at the University of British Columbia. In one experiment, researchers gave randomly selected people either a $5 or $20 bill, and asked them to spend the money that day. Half were told to spend the cash to benefit someone else and the other half to use the money on themselves. Asked to rate their happiness, people who used the money to benefit others felt happier.
