"Sesame Street" welcomes a new friend on the block. Ji-Young, who will be the first Korean-American character on the show, is a seven-year-old who plays the electric guitar and is in a band with Elmo. Ji-Young will debut on the Thanksgiving Day special titled, "See Us Coming Together." In response to recent events, the show wanted to address issues around racism and discrimination against Asian and Pacific Islanders. Racial literacy has been one of its core messages for years. "It's a powerful thing when kids see people like themselves represented on screen and in stories," said Alan Muraoka, who joined the cast in 1998. "It supports them as they figure out who they are and who they want to be."
