In 1978 astronomers at China's Purple Mountain Observatory discovered an unknown asteroid. They named it to honor Ye Shuhua's many contributions in the field of astronomy. Her career began in 1951 when she joined the Shanghai Astronomy Observatory where she broke the glass ceiling by becoming the institute's first female researcher. In 1993, she was named head of the observatory, once again breaking through the barriers to women. "If you want to get something, you have to fight for it," she said in an interview with Sixth Tone.
