University of Maine researchers have discovered that the effects of climate change -- namely, heavy rainfall -- have led to a multitude of problems in the growth of potatoes, such as pests and over-flooding. The change in weather patterns is expected to affect other crops, too. While the change in climate conditions is predicted to lead to growth in wheat, the flourishing of corn has been curbed. Right now, researchers are engaged in the process of cross-pollinating potato varieties to better withstand climate patterns.
