Dr. Subodh Kumar Singh is a plastic surgeon in Uttar Pradesh, India. Since 2002, he performed more than 37,000 free cleft-palate surgeries for children. Cleft palate is a birth condition characterized by an opening in the mouth, causing difficulties with speaking and eating. Because of his work, he brought smiles to more 25,000 families. His compassion is born from the depths of losing his father when he only 13, which plunged his family into financial hardship. Singh's elder brother landed a job and supported Singh through his medical examinations. "In every cleft child who has come to me," Dr. Singh says, "I have visualized that little Subodh, who lost his father when he was only 13. My father, Gyan Singh, and mother, Giriraj Kumari (she died last year), taught me to serve the poor and live ethically."
