Food waste tossed into the trash bins ends up in landfills. Once decomposing, the waste releases methane, a greenhouse gas more harmful to than those deriving from fossil fuels. Knowing this, the state of California passed a law mandating food scraps to be disposed of in compost bins. Organic waste makes up half of the state's landfills and a fifth of methane emissions according to CalRecycle. With the food scraps, municipals will convert them into compost or biogas. Rachel Wagoner, direction of the CA Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery, says that recycling food scraps is the single easiest and fastest thing that every single person can do to affect climate change.
