Michael Gartner had a special goodbye for the 23 full-time employees of the Iowa Cubs minor-league baseball team. On his last day as principal owner, Gartner delivered a farewell speech at the ballpark in Des Moines. As employees were eating their hot dogs and sipping their beers, he handed out new "business cards" to everyone. Inside the envelopes were checks totaling $600,000. Gartner wanted to share the team's recent sales. Everyone, from marketing managers, stadium workers, to janitorial staff, were speechless. It was hard not to cry. "You work in sports and it's usually long hours and low pay," said Alex Cohen, the team's lead broadcaster. "You're not in it to make money. But this is an ownership group that really cares about its employees. And this gesture really typified that."
