When 17-year-old Lilian Bee Young, took up the lifeguard job in the north coast of New South Wales, Australia, she did not realize that rescuing a wild kangaroo would be her first assignment. When she realized that the eastern grey kangaroo jumping on the rocks had fallen into the ocean and was in trouble, Lilian grabbed her surfboard, paddled behind it and gently steered it towards the beach. It was a windy day and the waters were choppy, and Lilian was mindful of the danger of stressing out the animal and causing injury to herself. She and the kangaroo got a standing ovation from the onlookers when they finally reached the shore. "I didn't think that was gonna ever be my first rescue … a kangaroo at my local, but it's pretty special!" says a delighted Lilian.
